What is the NDIS?

The NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
It’s a government program that helps Australians with permanent and significant disabilities get the support they need to live a better life.

Whether it’s help at home, support to go out, or therapy to improve your health—NDIS gives you funding to get the right services for your goals.

The NDIS provides funding for essential services, including:
✔ Therapy & rehabilitation (e.g., physiotherapy, occupational therapy).
✔ Assistive technology (e.g., mobility aids, orthotics, wheelchairs).
✔ Support workers for daily activities.
✔ Home modifications and accessibility support.
✔ Community participation programs.

Who is the NDIS For?

The NDIS is for people who:

  • Are under 65 years old

  • Live in Australia

  • Have a permanent disability that affects their everyday life

This can include:

  • Physical disabilities

  • Intellectual disabilities

  • Mental health conditions

  • Sensory or neurological conditions

  • Developmental delays

What Kind of Support Can the NDIS Help With?

Every NDIS plan is different—because it’s made for your unique needs.
Some examples of what the NDIS may fund include:

  • Help with daily tasks (like cooking, cleaning, or getting ready)

  • Support workers to assist you in the community

  • Therapy services (like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or psychology)

  • Mobility aids (like wheelchairs, walkers, braces)

  • Home modifications

  • Help with education or finding work

How Does the NDIS Work?

  1. Apply for the NDIS
You can apply online or by calling 1800 800 110. You’ll need some paperwork from your doctor or specialist.

  2. Planning Meeting
If you’re eligible, you’ll have a meeting to talk about your needs and goals.

  3. Your Plan Starts
You’ll get a budget to use on supports and services. You choose how to use your plan—and who you want to work with.

Do I Have to Pay for NDIS Support?

No.
If you’re approved for the NDIS, the funding is paid for by the government.
